Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to develop the Korean version of the 11-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children(the K-CES-DC 11), examining its reliability and validity. The data consisted of 552 middle school students residing in a metropolitan area. Various data analysis techniques were used including internal consistency analysis, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis. The main results of the present study were as follows. First, Cronbach¡¯s ¥á index was .94, showing high level internal consistency of the K-CES-DC 11. Second, the results of the criterion validity analyses showed that the K-CES-DC 11 showed very high positive correlation coefficients with the scales measuring the same psychological attributes (CES-DC 20, CES-D 11); a high positive correlation coefficients with the scales measuring the theoretically similar attributes(PANSI-NSI); high negative correlation coefficients with the scale measuring the theoretically negative-correlated attributes (RES, SWLS, PANSI-PI), suggesting the criterion validity of the K-CES-DC 11 to some degree. Lastly, the confirmatory factor analysis results showed that a correlated 4-factor model of the K-CES-DC 11 fitted best to the data. These findings suggest that K-CES-DC 11 would be a reliable and valid scale for measuring depression of adolescents in Korea. Study implications are discussed and further research is suggested.
